Peanut butter and jelly
Not surprisingly, it was 12 noon before we all got up. Felt a bit guilty: our poor hosts had been up since 6am. Shôn and I went for bread and milk whilst Jay cooked scrambled eggs. Tasted good with toast and tea - actual tea!
The remainder of the day was spent enjoying the luxury of comfy seats and stereo sounds. Chatted with Jay, read the Plain Dealer and wrote diary. Slowly ploughed through Patti’s excellent record collection.
Turns out that Jay owns his own record shop in Australia. Thus he can take six months to check out the States. His father is a bookie, and they regularly travel from Melbourne up to Wagga for the races. He originally intended to come to America, buy a Corvette Stingray and ship it back. He was then going to have it converted to right-hand drive for $2,000. Bought the disc business instead.
Patti and Mary Kay returned about 4.30 in bad moods. First day at work after a week’s holiday - not nice. Mary Kay went and bought some chicken and soon there were delicious smells emanating from the kitchen. Jay and I went for some Coke etc from the store, and when we returned, our dinner was ready. Delicious chicken cooked in Shake ’n’ Bake - a kind of Colonel Sanders coating, which comes in various flavours. Corn and stuffing to go with it. Us lads did the washing up, though the dishwasher took care of most of it. Garbage disposal whizzed away all the bits at the end. Even chicken bones.
Patti (Mary Kay’s sister) came round with Gayle. They had both just returned from their holiday in London. Mixed opinions of Great Britain. Gayle didn’t want to come back. Patti was more critical. Didn’t like sharing loos in the hotel. Food was undercooked by US standards. Didn’t try fish and chips “because we couldn’t find an Arthur Treacher’s”! Went into a pub, chewing gum, and ordered pints of beer. A guy came up to them and told them they were “common”. We felt embarrassed about that. They also objected to the anti-US propaganda on TV.
Later the girls produced a birthday cake for Shôn (his birthday is actually tomorrow). Had those trick candles in it (the ones that don’t go out) and was very good. Carol introduced us to peanut butter and jelly (I had it in Oxford, but the others had never heard of it). Jay told her that Aussies and English are brought up on baked beans instead. Parted company with the girls - this time for good. Sacked out on the floor again after watching Kirk Douglas film.
